On the plaza at the heart of Drunen, the Sint-Lambertuskerk and the town hall face each other across a square lined with pubs, restaurants and shops. The centre was modernised not so long ago, because little of the old village survived the shelling before its liberation.
Drunen is a Langstraat town. The name means 'long road', and the string of villages along it has been known for leather and shoes for generations. Later came metal: the ship's propeller factory that started as Lips and is now Wärtsilä, with aluminium and brass works alongside. Then there is the landscape. The Loonse en Drunense Duinen, a national park of dunes and forest, lies between Drunen and Tilburg, and at the opening of the new centre an artwork went up with lines from a poem about the dunes.
Pick out the Breeveldpark or the Monument 51ste Highland Division on the map and the rest falls into place: the dunes on one side, the shoemakers' Langstraat on the other.
