Utrechtse Heuvelrug
The name Thribergen turns up in a document of the twelfth century, and the town that carries it today grew out of two settlements, Driebergen and Rijsenburg, that only became one municipality in the twentieth. Below them, the medieval Langbroekerwetering drained the marshy land and gave the area its long lines of farms and estates.
What marks the place out is where it stands: against the slope of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, on the Stichtse Lustwarande, a row of more than a hundred country houses and estates along the ridge. Daily life here comes with a lot of trees. People walk the Driebergen forest and the Rijsenburg forest, commute from the station Driebergen-Zeist, which stands where the medieval hamlet of Werdorp once lay, and book a table at La Provence, the restaurant with a Michelin star.
Buitenplaats Sparrendaal is the kind of name everyone here knows. Put it on a shirt and the woods, the estates and the walk home from the station come with it.
