Rock carvings
Drammen is known as the river city, and the river made it. Timber floated down the Drammenselva and was shipped out from its mouth, turning the little seaports of Bragernes on the north bank and Strømsø and Tangen on the south into one of the most important trading and shipping towns in eastern Norway. In time the ports were joined into a single town, and Drammen was for centuries the administrative centre of Buskerud.
The history here goes back much further than timber. The rock carvings at Åskollen and Austad are the first signs of people in the area, the largest of them a moose, and you can still see carvings at Helleristningene i Skogerveien. Drammens museum and the old farms of Gulskogen gård and Austad gård keep later centuries within reach. Today the town holds a remarkable string of national and international prizes for how it has rebuilt its streets and waterfront.
If Spiralen, the river and the bridges between Bragernes and Strømsø are part of your story, you know exactly why Drammen deserves a place on your shirt.
