Hanseatic past

Dortmund lies on the Emscher and the Ruhr, two tributaries of the Rhine, in the eastern Ruhr, and it is the largest city both of the Ruhr and of Westphalia. It was founded more than a thousand years ago, became an Imperial Free City and was a leading voice in the Hanseatic League before industry turned it into one of Germany's great centres of coal, steel and beer.

For many who grew up here, the feeling of Dortmund is a sound: the roar from the Signal Iduna Park on a match day, carrying across the rooftops. Others think of the Sankt Reinoldi-Kirche in the centre, in a city that was bombed almost flat in the war and rebuilt, or of the Dortmunder U, now a centre for art and creativity. The Brauerei-Museum and the Hoesch Museum keep the working past close, while the Deutsches Fußballmuseum celebrates the passion that still unites the city.

And on any Saturday the Westenhellweg is packed with shoppers, carrier bags in hand, while the Dortmunder U stands over the inner city like a familiar signpost home.
