Old Valdresbanen

Dokka is known as Norway's first official landsby, a title the village received in 2009 and has worn ever since. It is the administrative centre of Nordre Land Municipality in Innlandet, and it takes its name from the local river Dokka, from the Old Norse word dǫkk, meaning a "pit" or a "hollow".

History arrived here by rail. The line from Eina reached Dokka in 1902 under the name Landsbanen, and it was extended as the Valdresbanen to Fagernes in 1906. Passenger trains stopped running in 1988 and the last freight trains in 1999, but the track still has a use: between Hov and Dokka you can pedal a rail bike along it. In 2002 the village celebrated its hundredth anniversary, and Lands museum lies close by.

Geography explains why Dokka became a trading place. The village sits at the confluence of the rivers Dokka and Etna, just north of Randsfjorden, the fourth largest lake in Norway. County Road 33 runs through from Odnes and on west towards Etnedal and Bjørgo, County Road 245 follows the west side of the lake, and Østsinni Church stands on the northern edge of the village.

Come up along Randsfjorden, see the lake end and the two rivers meet, and you are back in the village that chose to remain a village.
