Diemerbos

Ever noticed how quickly Amsterdam turns into Diemen? It lies just 6 km south-east of the city centre, on the far side of the A10, and is crossed by three waterways: the Weespertrekvaart, the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal and the little river Diem, which gave the town its name. 'Die eme' simply means 'the water'.

What makes Diemen unusual is how stubbornly it has stayed itself. It is wedged between parts of Amsterdam on almost every side, it grew fast as a commuter town, and still it is its own municipality, with its own centre around the town hall, the largest shopping centre and the station between Noord and Centrum. Diemen Noord has a few recreated late-medieval houses and the green Diemerpolder; Diemen Zuid borders the Bijlmer and runs out into the Diemerbos. The Flevopark, now part of Amsterdam, stands on what was once Diemen's own hamlet of Outersdorp.

From Diemen Noord, only the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal separates you from IJburg and the Diemerpark on the other bank.
