Detmold lies along the northern foot of the Teutoburg Forest, the wooded ridge of the Osning rising at the southern edge of town while the Werre winds through the streets below. For four and a half centuries it was the residence of the lords, counts and princes of Lippe, and it still has the air of a small capital.
The town sits in the middle of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, east of Bielefeld, and that central position shows in everyday life: the music academy, the technical university and the regional government all bring people in each morning. Life centres on the old town around the Fürstliches Residenzschloss Detmold, with the Landestheater close by. Weekends lead out of town to the LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold - Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Volkskunde, or up the Grotenburg to the Hermannsdenkmal, the tallest statue in Germany.
