coal mining
On the shore of Pogoria II, with water stretching out in front of you, it is easy to forget that Dąbrowa Górnicza made its name through coal. The city's lakes cover more than 800 hectares, forests take up over a fifth of its area, and part of the Eagles' Nests Landscape Park reaches its outskirts. Within the city limits lies the Błędów Desert, the largest desert in Poland and in all of Central Europe.
The Muzeum Miejskie "Sztygarka" w Dąbrowie Górniczej keeps the other half of the story. Dąbrowa began as a village in an oak grove, which is what its name means, and grew into an important coal-mining centre in the 19th century; 'Górnicza', the mining part of the name, was added in 1919. Today it sits on the Czarna Przemsza and Biała Przemsza rivers at the eastern end of the Katowice urban area and gives its name to the Dąbrowa Basin. Park Kępa and the Uroczysko Zielona add more green to the map.
The image that sums it up: desert sand and a string of lakes, both inside the boundary of one industrial city.
