Pilgrimages
Have you ever walked into Częstochowa with a pilgrimage, watching for the monastery to appear over the hills? Millions of people come here every year from all over the world to see the Black Madonna at Jasna Góra.
The city lies on the Warta in southern Poland, on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, which locals call the Jura. It belongs to the Silesian Voivodeship on paper, yet historically it is part of Lesser Poland, and before the partitions it lay in the Kraków Voivodeship. The ruins of the royal castle at Olsztyn stand a short drive away, and in the district of Raków an ancient Lusatian cemetery has been turned into an archaeological reserve. Today Częstochowa is the largest economic, cultural and administrative hub in the north of its province, with a university of technology and a busy railway junction.
If you grew up here, Jasna Góra is less a shrine than a compass point: you always know where it is. Take the city with you, and you will never quite lose your bearings.
