Saturn coal mine
Oldest town in Zagłębie
Brynica river
The Cechownia KWK Saturn, the old pithead building of the Saturn colliery, is where Czeladź keeps the memory of the mine that turned it into an industrial town in the late nineteenth century. Yet Czeladź is far older than coal. It was first recorded as a village with an inn and a bridge over the Brynica, received town rights in the thirteenth century, and is the oldest urban centre of Zagłębie Dąbrowskie.
It has always been a town on an edge. Historically part of Lesser Poland, it spent centuries in the Duchy of Siewierz under the bishops of Kraków, and its town hall saw the signing of the agreement that ended the War of the Polish Succession. Later it was the last town of Congress Poland before Prussian Silesia. Today it belongs to the Katowice urban area, bordered by Będzin, Sosnowiec, Katowice and Siemianowice Śląskie.
Park Alfred was laid out on the reclaimed ground of the Saturn mine, green where the coal used to be. That is Czeladź in a single picture, and a good reason to wear it.
