Feast of St Helena
Quartu Sant'Elena takes its name from a Roman milestone: the town stands at the fourth mile of the old road out of Cagliari, and the stone itself stayed in the centre until the market hall was built. The saint's name came later, honouring St Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, who is said to have passed this way.
There is a fierce local pride in that long past. Prenuragic, Nuragic and Phoenician traces have been found around the town, and there are many nuraghi nearby. In the Middle Ages Quartu belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari, then suffered famine and pirate raids under Aragonese rule; the Carcere Aragonese still recalls those years. When a French fleet landed on this coast, the townspeople drove the soldiers back. The Museo Etnografico Sa Domu 'e Farra keeps a large peasant house with its rooms and tools as they were.
Today Quartu is the third city of Sardinia, with the Poetto beach on one side and the pink flamingos of the Parco Naturale Regionale "Molentargius-Saline" on the other. Put those flamingos on your shirt and you carry the town's wild side with you, right beside its history.
