About Crotone

Known for

Pythagoras

Known for

Magna Graecia

Known for

Capo Colonna

How many children learn about Pythagoras at school in the very town where he once lived? In Crotone, every one of them. The city began as the Achaean colony of Kroton and became one of the great centres of Magna Graecia, famous for its athletes, its physicians and its community of philosophers.

What stays with people from here is the sea: the Ionian along the shore, the long promontory of Capo Colonna with the single standing column of the temple of Hera, and the protected waters towards Capo Rizzuto. The old town winds through narrow lanes and small squares down to Piazza Pitagora, and the Castello di Carlo V, with bastions such as the Baluardo Toledo and the Bastione Don Pedro, still watches over it. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Crotone keeps the finds of ancient Kroton.

Coming home means seeing that lone column on the cape again, out where the land runs into the sea. This is where you belong.
