Ever ordered a dish 'à la Clamart'? The peas on the side owe their name to this town, whose fields sent the season's first peas to Les Halles in Paris. Clamart lies in the south-western suburbs, on the border with both Essonne and Yvelines, and a forest runs right through it: the Bois de Clamart, part of the larger Forêt domaniale de Meudon, separates historic Bas-Clamart from Petit-Clamart, which grew up in the 1960s where the pea fields used to be.
The Bois de la Solitude and the Menhir de la Pierre aux Moines belong to that wooded side of the map, along with the Château des Montalets and the Parc Frédéric Pic. The ground rises and falls across the commune, from the low town to the edge of the plateau. Above Clamart in 1858, the photographer Nadar took the world's first aerial photograph, and in 1962 Charles de Gaulle survived an assassination attempt as his car sped through Petit-Clamart. More recently, a new neighbourhood has grown up around the man-made Lac du Panorama.
If you grew up here, the map is the walk from Bas-Clamart through the trees to Petit-Clamart and back again.
