About Città Di Castello

Known for

Burri collection

Known for

upper Tiber valley

Known for

round bell tower

Città di Castello is known for the art inside its walls: the Collezione Burri, the Pinacoteca Comunale in Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, and the round bell tower, the Campanile Cilindrico, beside the Cattedrale di San Florido. It is the main town of the upper Tiber valley and a bishop's seat, and its story begins with the Umbrian settlement the Romans called Tifernum Tiberinum, where Pliny the Younger kept an estate and paid for a temple. After the Lombards walled and fortified it, the town became known for the castles around it, and the name followed.

It lies at the northern tip of Umbria, on the flood plain of the Tiber below the Apennines, with Tuscany, Romagna and the Marche all close by. Arezzo is a short drive west, Perugia further south, and the comune even owns a small, empty exclave, Monte Ruperto, inside the Marche. The Museo della Tela Umbra keeps the town's weaving tradition alive.

Coming back up the valley and catching sight of that cylindrical bell tower above the rooftops is, for anyone from here, the moment the journey is over.
