medieval castle
historic brewery
hyperboloid water tower
Ciechanów is known for three things: its medieval castle, its brewery, founded in the 18th century, and a science park with a water tower shaped like a hyperboloid. It is an unlikely trio for a town in northern Mazovia, and a fair summary of the place. Daily life moves between the old and the new: the Zamek Książąt Mazowieckich w Ciechanowie stands by the Łydynia river, while the Park Nauki Torus draws school groups and families.
What sets Ciechanów apart is how far back it reaches. It was recorded in 1065, guarded northern Mazovia against raids for centuries, and in 1559 saw the publication of Poland's pioneering law on honey harvesting. From 1975 to 1998 it even served as a regional capital, and the Muzeum Szlachty Mazowieckiej keeps the memory of the gentry who once ran the land.
If you grew up in the shadow of those castle walls, this map is yours to carry: the river bend, the old fortress and the road south to Warsaw.
