Known for

La Cité de la Mer

At the northern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, where the Divette meets a bay opening onto the English Channel between Cap Lévi and Cap de la Hague, lies Cherbourg. Built at sea level and partly on land won from the water, the town has grown up in the shadow of the Montagne du Roule.

There is a salty, busy feeling to everyday Cherbourg that locals miss the moment they leave. Ferries come and go, the navy keeps its port, and the Rade de Cherbourg, the largest artificial harbour in Europe, frames every view of the sea. Its population is younger than the rest of the Manche, and the town has the energy to match, from the university district in Octeville to the old streets around the harbour. On a free afternoon there is La Cité de la Mer, where Le Redoutable can be visited, the Musée Thomas Henry and the greenhouse of the Parc Emmanuel Liais.

And above it all stands the Fort du Roule on the Montagne du Roule, looking down on the grey water of the harbour and the Channel beyond.
