Capital of Culture 2025

Where the Zwönitz and the Würschnitz meet in Altchemnitz, they become the Chemnitz, the river that gave the city its name, from a Slavic word for stone. The settlement first appears in writing in 1143, grew around a Benedictine monastery and its market, and in the industrial age turned into one of Germany's great manufacturing towns. From 1953 to 1990 it was called Karl-Marx-Stadt, and in 2025 it was European Capital of Culture.

Chemnitz lies in the Ore Mountain Basin, with the Ore Mountains rising to the south and the Central Saxon Hill Country to the north. Together with Leipzig and Dresden it forms a triangle of Saxon cities, Chemnitz holding the south-western corner, and it sits in the middle of a chain of towns along the northern foreland of the mountains, from Plauen through Zwickau to Freiberg. The industrial past is still everywhere: more than half the buildings date from before 1950, and the Industriemuseum Chemnitz, the Sächsisches Eisenbahnmuseum Chemnitz and the Villa Esche each hold a piece of it.

The detail that stays is the Karl-Marx-Monument, still standing in the centre long after the city took back its old name.
