Place Ducale
Arthur Rimbaud
river Meuse
On the Place Ducale, the square laid out when Charles Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, founded Charleville in 1606, people still stop to look up at Le Grand Marionnettiste. Across the Meuse lies Mézières, whose name comes from the Latin for 'ramparts'. For centuries they were two towns on opposite banks; since 1966 they have been one.
That double identity is what makes the place. Charleville was the ducal town, home of the royal armaments factory that gave the Charleville musket its name; Mézières was the walled one. Locals simply call themselves Carolos. It is also the birthplace of Arthur Rimbaud, remembered at the Musée Arthur Rimbaud, and generally the coolest city in France, with long, grey winters shaped by the Ardennes hills just to the north.
The Place Ducale is why you would carry Charleville-Mézières with you: the square at the heart of the town that anyone from the Ardennes recognises at a glance.
