Battle of Cerignola
On the Piano delle Fosse Granarie, the wide square in the middle of Cerignola, the town's grain was once stored in pits beneath the paving, and people still cross it on their way to the shops or the bar. Around it stand the Palazzo Cirillo-Farrusi and, a short walk away, the Arco della Rimembranza.
For anyone who grew up here, Cerignola means long, hot summers and fields that seem to go on for ever. The comune has the third-largest land area in Italy, after Rome and Ravenna, reaching from the edge of the Tavoliere down into the Ofanto valley. Farming shaped the place: this is the largest agricultural centre in the province of Foggia, home of the red Rosso di Cerignola wine, and the town where Giuseppe Di Vittorio led the farm labourers' struggles. In 1503 the Spanish beat the French just below the town.
And on a town wall, Il Murale Di Vittorio keeps his face in the everyday streets, a few blocks from the old grain square.
