About Celle

Timber-framed old town

Known for

Schloss Celle

Known for

Lüneburg Heath

Ever tried counting the timber-framed houses on your way through Celle's Altstadt? You would be at it for a while: there are more than 400 of them, and together they make Celle one of the most remarkable stops on the German Timber-Frame Road. The town sits on the banks of the Aller, a tributary of the Weser, at the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath, and its old centre is made for slow walks and unhurried afternoons.

What sets Celle apart is the court that once lived here. From 1378 to 1705 it was the residence of the Lüneburg branch of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and Schloss Celle, built in Renaissance and Baroque styles, still anchors the town. In 1524 Celle became the first town after Wittenberg to embrace the Reformation completely. The Französischer Garten, the Bomann-Museum and the Kunstmuseum Celle mit Sammlung Robert Simon fill out the picture, while the Sprechende Laternen, the talking lanterns, add a touch of play.

Come back along the Aller after a long time away, hear the Celler Glockenspiel ring out over the gables, and Celle welcomes you home as if you had never left.
