City of Two Seas
Silk and velvet
Ionian wind
Catanzaro climbs from the Ionian shore up the valley of the Fiumarella to three hills above the Gulf of Squillace, on the narrowest neck of land in the whole Italian peninsula. To the north the land rises on towards the Sila; to the south the Corace marks the edge of the municipality. It is the capital of Calabria, a university city home to the Magna Græcia University, and a place where everyday life runs between the old centre on the hills, the busy valley below and a stretch of beach and marina down on the sea.
What stays with anyone who has lived here is the wind. It blows in from the Ionian Sea and down from the Sila, strong enough to be one of the city's three V's, alongside Saint Vitalian, its patron, and the velvet of a silk trade that goes back to Byzantine times. On the clearest days, from the northern districts, you can see both seas at once. In summer, the Ionian coast down to Soverato fills with young people, and the Villa Margherita offers shade in town.
If you grew up in the City of the Two Seas, wear it with the wind in your hair and the Ionian at your back.
