Cantù is known wherever European basketball is followed: Pallacanestro Cantù won the European Champions Cup in 1982 and again in 1983. Its heritage runs much deeper. The name may come from the Canturigi, a Celtic people of Insubria; Gauls founded a village here, the Romans took it in 196 BC, and in the Middle Ages Milan and Como fought over it until the Sforza of Milan took control for good.
What sets the town apart is the Basilica di San Vincenzo in Galliano, consecrated in 1007 by Ariberto da Intimiano, later Archbishop of Milan, and home to the oldest frescoes in Lombardy. It was once sold off as a private house before the town bought it back and returned it to worship. The bell tower of San Paolo is the other symbol of Cantù, the second largest city in the Brianza, rising over its green moraine hills.
From the Parco Belvedere the town opens out across those hills; this is one to wear for the basilica, the bell tower and the basketball.
