Jean Moulin's arrest
Rhône and Saône
Croix-Rousse plateau
In a doctor's house in the middle of Caluire-et-Cuire, Jean Moulin was arrested on 21 June 1943. The house belonged to Dr Dugoujon, and the arrest remains the event most people outside Lyon connect with the name.
The Château de Cuire tells an older story. Caluire and Cuire were once separate places, and Cuire itself had broken away from Cuire-la-Croix-Rousse before the two were joined at the end of the eighteenth century. The town stretches across the high plateau that continues the Croix-Rousse northwards, with the Rhône on one side and the Saône on the other. Up on the heights, the Fort de Montessuy recalls the plateau's military past. Below, the neighbourhoods of Saint-Clair, Cuire-le-Bas, Montessuy and Vassieux each keep their own character, from riverside quays to quiet streets on the plateau.
For the Caluirards, coming home means climbing back up from the river onto that plateau between two waters.
