From the Château Grimaldi, at the top of the Haut-de-Cagnes, the whole of Cagnes-sur-Mer seems to fall away towards the Mediterranean: tiled roofs, the hills behind and a long curve of beach below. Rainier Grimaldi built the castle on that hilltop in the early fourteenth century, and the old village grew up around it.
It is a town of two moods, and people who know it miss both. Up on the hill, steep lanes lead to the Église Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul and the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Protection, and not far off is the Musée Renoir. Down by the sea, the Cros-de-Cagnes began as a seasonal camp for fishermen from Menton, and the beaches stretch along the cove towards the Plage de l’Hippodrome.
Wherever life takes you, the castle on its hill is the first thing you look for on the way back.
