Visitors move quietly through the Musée Mémorial de Caen, the museum dedicated to peace that keeps the memory of the Battle for Caen, which destroyed much of the city in 1944. Outside, Caen is a busy regional capital: seat of the Normandy regional council, an old university town, a research centre and a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities network for its digital arts.

What it leaves you with is a sense of resilience. William the Conqueror built his castle here and was buried in the city, and the Hôtel d'Escoville, the Maison des Quatrans and the Tour Guillaume-Le-Roy now sit among streets rebuilt after the war. The Abbaye d'Ardenne lies on the edge of town, and the evenings belong to students and festivals.

And down the Orne at Ouistreham, the ferry leaves for Portsmouth, carrying Caen's long link with England out across the Channel.
