Upper Silesian Museum
Polonia Bytom
mining heritage
Have you ever heard someone from Bytom list what their city has? An opera house, the Upper Silesian Museum, a share in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Polonia Bytom, a club that has won at both football and ice hockey. Bytom lies just northwest of Katowice and is one of the oldest cities in Upper Silesia, first recorded as Bitom in 1136 and once the seat of the Piast dukes of the Duchy of Bytom.
Muzeum Górnośląskie is the place to grasp how much the city has carried: centuries of digging for coal, zinc and lead, Prussian and German rule from 1742 to 1945, deep pollution from heavy industry and a hard decline after 1989. Its UNESCO claim comes through part of the Tarnowskie Góry Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine and its Underground Water Management System.
And then there is Lew Śpiący, the sleeping lion: a fitting mascot for a city that keeps getting back on its feet, and one worth wearing with some pride.
