Bydgoszcz straddles the meeting of the Brda and the Vistula, with the Bydgoszcz Canal joining them, and for centuries that crossing of waterways has made it a river port and a place where goods and people change direction.
Ask someone who grew up here what they miss, and the answers tend to be wet: the Bydgoski Tramwaj Wodny gliding past the granaries, rowing boats on the Brda, summer evenings on Mill Island. The city is called the capital of Polish rowing, and its rowers and canoeists have brought home a remarkable share of the country's Olympic medals. Then there is Myślęcinek, the largest forest park in Poland, and the Bory Tucholskie just to the north.
The architecture earned Bydgoszcz the nickname Little Berlin, with Gothic, Art Nouveau and Modernist streets side by side, and the timber-framed Spichrze nad Brdą are among the best-known landmarks in Poland. The most precise detail of all: the Stary Rynek lies exactly on the eighteenth meridian east.
