Buvika lies at the very end of the Gaulosen, the arm of the Trondheimsfjord where the Gaula River runs out to sea a little way to the northeast. The protected waters of Gaulosen marine verneområde are right on its doorstep, and Kvennberget rises above the houses.
On the road map Buvika sits along the E39, about halfway between Børsa and Nypan/Klett, and that road has helped it grow quickly in recent years. The western part of the village is called Ilhaugen, and the two together form one built-up area. Few people work in the village itself; most commute to neighbouring municipalities, Trondheim among them. In the middle stand the grain silos of the old Piene mill, known locally as Mørna, where a strike in 1913–14 ended with a striker killed, a story later told on stage as Skottet i Buvika. Buvik Church stands here too, and until the municipal mergers the village was the centre of its own Buvik Municipality.
If Gaulosen is the water you grew up beside, you will know this map by heart.
