Bryne began as Thime Station, one of the stops that sprang up along the Jærbanen railway, and only took its present name after a local referendum. Around the station came a chapel, a store, a wool-processing factory and a dairy, and soon workshops making ploughs, mowers and harvesting equipment. Later, two brothers introduced the Brøyt, Europe's first excavator with fully hydraulic power, and the company Tralfa built the world's first spray-painting robot.

The town lies on the southern shore of the lake Frøylandsvatnet, half an hour by train south of Stavanger, in the middle of the Jæren farmland. Its name fits the setting: it comes from Old Norse words for an edge or slope and a meadow, and the town sits on the high ground above the lake. Bryne grew into a school town and a trading centre for the district, with Storgata as its shopping street and the Garborgsenteret honouring the writer couple Arne and Hulda Garborg.

In Fritz Røed Park, the sculptor's works stand in and around the river that runs through it, and at the far end waits the old Bryne Mølle.
