Coastal town
Brønnøysundregistrene
Brønnøysund owes its name to fresh water. The island of Brønnøya was named for its well, and for seafarers on this coast an island where they could find drinking water was worth remembering. Today it is the southernmost town in Northern Norway and calls itself the coastal town in the middle of Norway, set on a long, narrow, winding peninsula of bays, inlets and coves, sheltered from the open sea by countless islands, islets and skerries.
Coming home here has its own feeling: the Hurtigruten swinging into the sound, the bridge reaching across to Hestøya, and Torghatten, the legendary mountain, visible from the town itself. In the Viking Age the chieftains at Torgar, at its foot, held one of the most powerful seats on the coast. Around the centre the town folds in and out of the water at Frøkenosen and climbs small hills such as Flaggstanghaugen and Flatåsen, with green corners like Kløvermarka Park and Lille Brønnøya Folkepark between the houses.
If your voice still carries the local lilt, the one people say sounds almost Swedish, you already know these bays by heart.
