The Wieża Krzyżacka stands over the old town of Brodnica, a few streets from the Drwęca, and beyond the rooftops begin the forests and lakes of the protected park that takes its name from the town. Brodnica lies on both banks of the river, where two historic lands meet, and the water has shaped it from the start: the oldest part, Michałowo, grew up as a castellany with a customs chamber on the trade route between Mazovia and Pomesania.
The Brama Chełmińska is one of the medieval gates that still mark the edge of the old town, now home to a gallery. Nearby stands the Pomnik Anny Wazówny, honouring Anna Vasa of Sweden, sister of Sigismund III Vasa, who owned the town early in the seventeenth century. Founded by the Teutonic Order and later a royal town of Poland, Brodnica traded in wood, fish, furs, grain and wool, and its granaries along the Drwęca still show it. It is also home to the oldest continuously operating Polish bank.
The Zamek w Brodnicy is where it all began, with the Teutonic commander ruling the surrounding lands from its walls. Wear it, and you wear a town that has been trading, fighting and rebuilding on the same river ever since.
