Henry the Lion
Research city
River Oker
Henry the Lion is the name that still defines Braunschweig, or Brunswick as English speakers have long called it. Under him the city grew into a powerful trading centre that joined the Hanseatic League in the thirteenth century, and the Braunschweiger Löwe remains its emblem. Today the city is just as well known for research: since 2007 no region in the European Union has been more intensive in research and development.
What makes its position unusual is the river. Braunschweig stands north of the Harz at the farthest navigable point of the Oker, which links it to the North Sea by way of the Aller and the Weser. The water still loops around the old centre, where Burg Dankwarderode, the Domkirche St. Blasii and the Altstadtrathaus recall the medieval city, and the Happy Rizzi House adds a very different splash of the present. It is the second-largest city in Lower Saxony, with large stretches of park and forest within its limits.
Arrive back in Braunschweig, see the lion again, cross the Oker once more, and you know you are home.
