About Brandenburg An Der Havel

Known for

Cradle of Brandenburg

Known for

Havel lakes

Known for

Cathedral island

The Steintorturm catches the first sun while the Havel slides past below, grey and unhurried. Brandenburg an der Havel wakes up slowly, between water and old stone.

What makes it unique is how much of it is river. The Havel splits into channels and canals around the town, leaving islands on which the place first grew, and ten natural lakes surround it, the Plauer See and the Beetzsee among them. For centuries the Old Town, the New Town and the cathedral island were three separate towns, and you still feel the boundaries as you cross the bridges between them. On the cathedral island stands the Dom St. Peter und Paul, begun in the twelfth century; on the Marienberg the Friedenswarte looks out over rooftops and water. This is the town that gave its name to the whole state, and to the margraviate long before it.

Growing up here means summers by the lakes and winter walks along the Havel, crossing the same bridges over and over until the map of the islands is in your bones.
