Only the A1 motorway separates Borne from Hengelo, yet nobody here would mistake one for the other. Borne sits in the heart of Twente with villages of its own, Hertme and Zenderen, and a nickname of its own too: elsewhere in the region, people from Borne are known as Melbuul, Twents for 'flour bag'.

There is a quiet pride in how this place has punched above its weight. It was the first rural municipality in the Netherlands with its own power station and electric street lighting, and the Spanjaard textile works once employed a large share of its men, sending out Teddy nappies and Cinderella sheets. Out in the fields, old landweren, earth banks grown over with blackthorn and blackberries, still trace the lines of former defences. In the protected village centre stands the Bussemakerhuis, and the Monument Mammoet Boris and the Avontureneiland are part of the town as well.

If you are a Melbuul yourself, you know the way to the Bussemakerhuis without thinking, and you know which road leads out to Hertme. This map is for you, wherever you have ended up.
