Bóbr river
Bolesławiec stands on the Bóbr in Lower Silesia, with the forests of the Bory Dolnośląskie all around it. The town was founded around 1190 by Bolesław I the Tall, and its name, built from old Polish words for 'very' and 'fame', honours him. Under the German name Bunzlau it appears in records from the 13th century onwards; the present name was made official in 1946.
What makes it unique is clay. Bolesławiec is known far and wide for a long-standing pottery-making tradition, and it shows: the Muzeum Ceramiki w Bolesławcu, the Centrum Dawnych Technik Garncarskich and the Żywe Muzeum Ceramiki all keep the craft in view. Around the heritage Old Town stand the Studnia Miejska, the Fontanna z Czaplą and the Niebieska Kamieniczka, and the railway viaduct, the Wiadukt kolejowy w Bolesławcu, is a landmark in its own right.
For anyone who grew up here, the map holds the river, the viaduct and the Old Town streets – and, somewhere in a kitchen cupboard, a piece of local pottery.
