Saltstraumen
Bodø is known for FK Bodø/Glimt, one of the most successful football clubs in Norway, and for a year as one of the European Capitals of Culture. But the town's story begins with fish. People first settled at Saltstraumen, in the south of the municipality, back in the Stone Age, drawn by catches that never failed, and the town itself was founded as a market town close to Lofoten, so that fish would no longer have to pass through Bergen first. It became a real town on the map of Norway when the herring arrived.
What makes Bodø different is its position: on the Bodø peninsula between the Vestfjorden and the Saltfjorden, just north of the Arctic Circle, where the midnight sun stays above the horizon for weeks and the wind can come hard from west or east. The town was rebuilt after the Second World War, and Bodø domkirke and Bodø rådhus stand in that new centre. Norsk Luftfartsmuseum, Nordlandsmuseet and Bodøsjøen friluftsmuseum hold the rest of its history.
If you grew up here, the map will take you back to summer nights in full daylight, match days for Glimt and the road north towards Kjerringøy.
