Salt mine
Casimir the Great
Medieval Lesser Poland
On the market square stands the Pomnik Kazimierza III, a column the councillors of Bochnia decided to raise, at Jan Matejko's suggestion, to thank Casimir the Great. The king had given the town its town hall, a defensive wall with four gates, a hospital and shelter for miners, and new markets for its salt.
The Kopalnia Soli w Bochni is why any of that happened. The discovery of rock salt led to town rights for Bochnia, and the mine, built in the thirteenth century, is the oldest still working in Europe, a World Heritage Site and a Historic Monument of Poland. The founding document even gave the town a German name, Salzberg, because so many of its first residents were German-speaking settlers from Silesia. Fires, the Swedish Deluge and the Great Northern War brought it low, but the Galician railway helped it slowly recover. The Szyb "Campi" and the Muzeum im. Stanisława Fischera w Bochni keep both the mine and the town's long story in view.
Wherever you live now, the salt beneath the town and the column on the square are what make Bochnia feel like home.
