Böblingen once had its own airport. An airbase opened here in 1915 and a decade later became the state airport of Baden-Württemberg, with the aircraft pioneer Hanns Klemm building light planes right next to it. After the war the town reinvented itself again: IBM arrived in 1949, Hewlett-Packard ten years later, and the population tripled in two decades.
The Deutsches Bauernkriegsmuseum recalls a much darker day, the battle of May 1525, one of the bloodiest of the German Peasants' War. Everyday Böblingen is gentler than that. People walk round the Langer See, catch an exhibition at the Städtische Galerie, meet below the Grüner Turm or spend a Sunday at the Freizeitpark am Goldbach, and there is even the Deutsches Fleischermuseum, devoted to the butcher's trade. Sindelfingen is right next door, so close that the two towns are contiguous, and together they serve the villages around them. The Black Forest is about half an hour away, the Swabian Jura not much further.
If this is where you go for coffee after work, or where you first learnt to ride a bike along the Goldbach, then this map is yours: the hill, the lake and every street in between.
