Departmental prefecture
Ourcq canal
First French IKEA
Bobigny is known as the prefecture of Seine-Saint-Denis, the town where the department's business gets done, and as the home of the very first IKEA store in France. For decades Meccano made its French Dinky Toys here too, until the factory closed. Daily life moves along Métro Line 5, with stops at Bobigny – Pablo Picasso and Bobigny – Pantin – Raymond Queneau, and around the medical campus of Paris 13 University and the hotel school.
The town sits in the north-eastern suburbs on the plaine des Vertus, on the north bank of the Canal de l'Ourcq, with Drancy, La Courneuve, Pantin, Romainville, Noisy-le-Sec and Bondy all around. The ground is flat, and the layout is easy to read: business parks to the south and west, a dense centre of tower blocks around the town hall and prefecture, and older detached houses to the north towards Drancy. The Parc départemental de la Bergère and the Square Jean Jaurès give it breathing room, and the Mémorial de Bobigny remembers the thousands deported from the town's station during the war.
On the map, the canal traces the southern edge, and the Hôtel de Ville stands at the heart of the towers.
