Bisceglie stretches along the Adriatic between Trani to the north and Molfetta to the south, on flat farmland that slopes gently towards the sea and climbs inland to the first foothills of the Murge. Shallow valleys, the lame, cut through the land on their way to the shore, each with its own mild microclimate.

The Castello di Bisceglie stands over the oldest part of town, which sits higher than the later streets, on a rise once bounded by two of those valleys meeting at the harbour. Close by are the Museo Civico di Bisceglie and the Museo Diocesano. The Grotte di Ripalta and the Belvedere Ripalta are favourite outings, and the Cala di Fano is a beach the locals swim from. People have lived here since prehistoric times: there are Neolithic caves and, in the countryside, Bronze Age dolmens such as the Dolmen della Chianca. The beaches earned the Blue Flag, and the name itself may come from the Latin for watchtowers, posted along this coast to guard against pirates.

If Bisceglie is yours, you know that mix of old stone, open sea and farmland. Carry it with you.
