On Hovedgaden, the pedestrian street at the heart of Birkerød, grocers and speciality shops sit alongside a handful of sushi restaurants, and a few minutes away the small Birkerød Lake lies just south of the station. This is a town of detached family homes, where the old state school, Mantziusgården, has become a cultural centre with concerts, theatre, stand-up comedy and open workshops for glass, ceramics and weaving.

Birkerød sits on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, held between Lake Furesø to the south and Lake Sjælsø to the north. Rude Forest lies to the east, the wetland Vaserne runs along the Furesø shore, and Eskemose Forest by Sjælsø hides several natural springs. The S-train on the Hillerød line makes the city easy to reach, yet the woods and water always come first. In town, Birkerød lokalhistoriske arkiv og museum keeps the local story, and Birkerød Kunstforening shows art close to home.
