Biłgoraj's market square was laid out on a hill called Biały Goraj, which gave the town its name, when Adam Gorajski founded it in the sixteenth century. It stands on a clearing surrounded by the Solska Forest, in a corner of Lesser Poland once covered by dense woods and swamps.
Daily life here has a forest feel. Four small rivers – the Biała Łada, the Czarna Łada, the Osa and the Próchnica – cross the town, and Roztocze National Park is a short drive away. For generations Biłgoraj was a meeting point of Polish and Jewish culture, remembered today by the Ławeczka Isaaca Bashevisa Singera, while the Muzeum Ziemi Biłgorajskiej and the Zagroda Sitarska keep alive the town's long tradition of crafts.
Coming back means the forest closing in on both sides of the road, then the town opening up along the river – and you know you are home.
