Stand on a bridge over the Biała River and you are standing on an old frontier. The river once divided Silesia from Lesser Poland, and until 1951 it also divided two towns: Bielsko in the west, first mentioned in 1312, and Biała in the east, founded in the 16th century and made a town in 1723. In practice they had grown into one urban area long before the merger made it official, and the city still carries both names with a hyphen between them.
What sets Bielsko-Biała apart is how much of that double past it has kept. Textiles built its wealth, which the Dom Tkacza remembers, and the car industry followed, now celebrated at the Muzeum Motoryzacji. The Revivalist and Art Nouveau buildings of the central districts earned it the nickname Little Vienna, while the Zamek książąt Sułkowskich w Bielsku-Białej and the Katedra pw. Świętego Mikołaja w Bielsku-Białej are the landmarks everyone knows.
Fourteen peaks lie inside the city limits, so returning here means watching the Beskids rise behind the rooftops and knowing exactly where you belong.
