Royal town history

On the Bielsk Plain, beside the small River Biała that gave it its name, Bielsk Podlaski lies south of Białystok in Poland's far east. It was once capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship and a royal town on the merchant route from Kraków to Vilnius, visited by a string of Polish kings.

The Cerkiew pw. Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogurodzicy and the Kościół pw. Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i Świętego Mikołaja tell the town's identity in two traditions, Orthodox and Catholic, within the same streets. Bielsk is home to Poland's only post-secondary school of icon painting, and its festivals celebrate Belarusian sung poetry and Ukrainian culture. The Muzeum Podlaskie and the Wzgórze forteczne, the old fortress hill, keep its long royal history in view.

Come back from anywhere and the river, the fortress hill and the familiar streets are still where you left them.
