City of linen
Sparrenburg castle
Teutoburg Forest
From the walls of the Burg und Festung Sparrenberg, Bielefeld spreads out below like a lesson in why it was built here. Count Hermann IV of Ravensberg founded the town to guard a pass across the Teutoburg Forest, and the castle sits above it today, with the Hermannsweg hiking trail running along the ridge.
What makes Bielefeld's story unusual is cloth. It grew rich as the city of linen, a minor member of the Hanseatic League known for its bleachfields, and later built spinning mills, sewing machines and even cars. During the inflation of the Weimar years the local savings bank printed emergency money on silk, linen and velvet – the famous Stoffgeld, sent to collectors around the world. Today the city is better known for its university, the Bethel Foundation and Dr. Oetker, and the Altes Rathaus and the Kunsthalle sit in the centre.
If you know the climb up to the Sparrenburg and the view over the rooftops, you know Bielefeld. Wear it and let people ask where that castle is.
