Ever heard of a war fought over a cow? In 1469 Białogard and neighbouring Świdwin came to blows, and since the town marked the battle's 500-year anniversary, the people of both towns have met every year for a medieval-style contest instead.
What sets Białogard apart is age. The stronghold in the fork of the Parsęta and Leśnica rivers goes back to the 8th century, sat on the old salt route from Kołobrzeg to Poznań, and Gallus Anonymous called it a famous royal city named white. Bishop Otto of Bamberg came here on his mission in 1124. Lübeck law followed in 1299, staple rights in 1307, and membership of the Hanseatic League in 1386. Kościół pw. Świętego Jerzego and the Pozostałość Zamku Białogardzkiego on the Wzgórze zamkowe carry that long story into the present, alongside medieval town gates.
Today it is Middle Pomerania's most important railway junction, where lines from Kołobrzeg, Piła, Gdańsk and Stargard meet. For many people the journey home ends on that platform, with the old town a short walk away.
