Biała Podlaska lies on the Krzna in eastern Poland, where the South Podlasie Lowland meets Western Polesie, a short drive from the border with Belarus. It is the largest town of southern Podlasie by area, and once the residence of the powerful Radziwiłł family.
The town has a proud, slightly grand memory of itself. The Radziwiłłs built the fortress and castle, and the tower and gate of the Zamek w Białej Podlaskiej still stand. The Bialska Academy was one of the best schools in Poland in its day, and the town's high school, among the oldest in the country, counted the prolific writer Józef Ignacy Kraszewski among its pupils – he is remembered by the Ławeczka Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego. The violinist George Bridgetower was born here, and the town was once a pioneer of Polish faience and a centre of aircraft manufacturing. The Muzeum Południowego Podlasia keeps the region's story, including the deep wounds of the war years.
For anyone from here, the Krzna, the old castle gate and Archangel Michael on the coat of arms all mean the same thing: home.
