Known for

De Haag windmill

Until around the turn of the last century, Beuningen was a poor farming village on the Waal, regularly flooded, though a handful of wealthy farming families paid the highest taxes in the district. In the fifteenth century a small castle, Blanckenburgh, stood here; Roman remains still turn up whenever the ground is dug.

These days it feels more like a calm suburb of Nijmegen, with new neighbourhoods built around water, a restored windmill called De Haag, and summer evenings at De Groene Heuvels, the big lake in Ewijk where the Down The Rabbit Hole festival is held. Children grow up cycling past the Heuvepark and out to the river. Locals still call the place Bunninge.

And the Beuningse Uiterwaarden, the floodplains along the Waal, are where Beuningen keeps its oldest memory: the river that shaped this village is still right there, wide and slow, and that is something worth carrying with you.
