About Bergheim

Known for

River Erft

Known for

Lignite country

Known for

Aachener Tor

Have you ever climbed the Glessener Höhe? This hill, piled up from the spoil of lignite mining, is the highest point in a town that otherwise sits low in the Zülpicher Börde, part of the Cologne Bay. The Erft flows right through Bergheim, the foothills of the Ville run between the centre and the northern districts, and Cologne lies about 22 kilometres to the east.

For many, Bergheim means the Niederaussem Power Station, whose cooling tower is the tallest in the world and stands on the horizon like a landmark of its own. It means Roman history underfoot, for the Via Belgica once crossed the area, and the medieval Aachener Tor, which still stands with parts of the old town wall. Burg Thorr and Burg Zieverich are just as familiar to anyone from the villages around them, and the Bethlehemer Höhe has its own place in local walks.

Lukas Podolski grew up here, Michael Schumacher went to school here, and you may have your own claim to the town. Put a map of Bergheim on a shirt and the streets of your childhood come along with it.
