Bryggen wharf
Seven mountains
Buekorps brigades
Bergen is known for Bryggen, the row of old wooden wharf buildings on the harbour that recalls the city's centuries as a Hanseatic trading post and now stands on UNESCO's World Heritage list, and for the mountains that wall it in on every side but the sea. Founded as Bjørgvin, 'the green meadow among the mountains', it was once Norway's capital and for a long time its largest city, and it still carries itself that way.
Ask anyone who grew up here and they will talk about the rain, which falls on most days of the year, about the drums of the buekorps, the neighbourhood youth brigades marching through the streets, about the sing-song Bergensk dialect and about match days for SK Brann. Bergenhus festning keeps watch over the harbour, and the Hurtigruten coastal ships set off north from the quays.
On the map you can trace where you belonged: Åsane or Fana, Laksevåg or Årstad, the streets running down to Byfjorden and the steep hill you walked home in the drizzle.
